Musa Martial Arts teaches a Southern Chinese form of martial art called Wing Chun kung fu. This style is considered a soft form, using the opponent's strength and momentum as the basis of defense. Students who study Wing Chun kung fu develop a stronger understanding of their own bodies, spatial awareness, balance and reflexes. Ip Man was among the most renowned teachers of this style and notably taught Hong Kong and American martial artist Bruce Lee.
Lead instructor Ezri Musa has been practicing martial arts for 33 years and holds more than 20 years of teaching experience. They began their martial arts journey in Wing Chun kung fu, before taking up taekwondo and Karate. They hold a 3rd degree black belt in taekwondo and have extensive knowledge teaching Wing Chun kung fu and Isshinryu karate. They are a three time gold medalist in the Virginia State Taekwondo Championship tournaments. They have been a coach, judge and referee. They also served as a co-captain and head choreographer in martial arts team-based demonstration.
My approach to martial arts centers on treating each student with dignity and equity, encouraging thought, self expression and a diversity of voices. I frame martial arts as a cultural art form, focusing on body movement, balance, reaction time, situational and spatial awareness and the relationship between them while providing a safe space for students to grow and be authentically themselves. Musa Martial Arts welcomes students of all levels.
Musa Martial Arts provides three spaces for learning: public, private and school-based. Our public space classes are taught on the Great Lawn in Central Park. Private space classes can be taught in-home or at a location with which the student feels comfortable and safe. We also work with schools at a group rate to provide semester-based instruction on-campus.
My name is Ezri Musa (they/she). Martial arts have been a life passion since I was 6 years old. As a neurodivergent nonbinary person, I know what it’s like to feel excluded in martial arts spaces. My goal as a teacher is to create an environment where every student feels welcome and receives instruction in a way that matches their unique style of learning. I also wish to honor these art forms by teaching in a culturally aware manner that avoids appropriation and elevates the history of these forms. I view the teacher-student relationship as one of mutual respect, joy and growth. My desire is for every student of Musa Martial Arts to both feel a sense of accomplishment in whatever level of training they wish to attain while developing a deeper cultural appreciation for the form they’ve chosen to learn.
